Meditation Balances Ego and Attachment

"I cannot live without him", or other extreme, "I don't care at all".

One might have observed that ego and attachment cause many unhappy moments in our lives. Sometimes they lead to violent reactions, too. Attachment is when our feelings are so intense that we feel like we are bounded to a person, thing, cause or like. Can't be with them, but also cannot be without them. There is a constant pushing away and moving towards dynamic.

If these situations are not the way we want, we suffer. We generate sadness inside ourselves. But the truth is, we need to learn to accept what comes our way and let go of it when it is time for it to leave.

Similarly, when someone corrects us and we can feel offended. Even if we know that what they are saying is meaningless, but still we feel the sting. To protect ourselves from the sting, we strengthen our ego. The ego says, "I remember how you treated me yesterday, and I will protect myself today by asking for avoidance or attack. Though ego protects us, its presence also increases unhappiness.

The key is to have a balanced ego. One that can say no with compassion and firmness, but not so excessive that it turns into fanaticism or various forms of prejudice.

We can get rid of excess ego and attachment by regular practice of meditation. When the ego comes into balance, there is space for the soul. The soul awakens.
